Grange Estate Update - 09 Sep 2009

Following the completion of the perimeter access route at the Grange a new route will be available by the beginning of October 2009.  The new route will be available to pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists as well as anglers driving to access Dovecote Lake.   Please keep your dog on a lead if sheep are grazing in the field and take care when crossing the new haul road from Church End.

The first phase of Bedford River Valley Park; creating wet woodland habitat involves thinning some of the woodland compartments and excavating new networks of ditches that will link the Elstow Brook to the Great River Ouse.  This will encourage natural flooding of specific areas of woodland.  Although the thinning will involve felling trees, some of the compartments will be replanted with native species and additional areas of woodland will also be created.

The felling will change the look and feel of certain areas of the site but such action is required to improve the diversity and health of the woodlands.  By thinning the tree compartments more light will find its way to the woodland floor and hopefully encourage shrubby species to grow which would be beneficial to wildlife and help warm up the woods during winter months.

A new pedestrian only path around the northern tree compartment will be cleared over winter and new bridges installed to increase access.

If you have any concerns regarding the works or would like to be involved in any tree planting events at the Grange then please feel free to contact me on the number below.

Many thanks
