Bedford Development Framework (BDF)

----- Gypsy and Traveller Sites Plan -----

The Bedford Borough Council is preparing a Gypsy and Traveller Sites Plan as part of the Bedford Development Framework. Following the decision of the Council’s Executive on 13 July Gypsy and Traveller issues have been split off from the Allocations and Designations Plan and will now be taken forward in a separate Development Plan Document.

As part of preparing the plan it is now appropriate to carry out a further Gypsy and Traveller call for sites to seek to identify further potential sites for Gypsy and Traveller use. I am therefore writing to invite you to submit to the Council details of any land which you consider to be suitable and available for Gypsy and Traveller use by 28 November.

If you wish to propose a site for inclusion in the Plan you must provide the information necessary to enable the site assessment to be made.  This should be done using the site appraisal form available from the Council.  We would prefer you to submit this electronically and a copy of the form can be downloaded from www.bedford.gov.uk/gypsyandtravellersitesplan

From this section of the website it is also possible to view the site selection methodology which will be used to assess sites submitted as part of this process. This methodology is an updated version of the document consulted upon in 2008 as part of the Allocations and Designations Plan process shortened to refer only to matters relevant to Gypsy and Traveller sites. Paper copies of these documents are also available on request from Bedford Borough Council planning department

CURRENT ISSUES -During the last two months there has been one burglary dwelling, two burglaries in outbuildings and one theft from rear garden. These have all been on Station Road in Willington. Please continue to be vigilant as to who is about and report any suspicious activity by persons or vehicles. Willington Neighbourhood Watch has been very proactive in reporting suspicious vehicles and persons which has lead to valuable intelligence for Bedfordshire Police.

FREE SECURITY SURVEYS -We are raising the awareness of FREE security surveys available from your Safer Neighbourhood Team. If you would like us to conduct a survey on your home please contact us on the details below.  Here are some quick pointers for general security:

  • When leaving your house don’t forget to double lock your doors and ensure that you haven’t left any windows open.
  • Consider leaving a radio on to make it look like someone is at home.
  • Keep keys, handbags, laptops etc. out of sight and mark valuables with ultra violet pens.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the police.
  • Use security chains and invest in security lights.
  • Lock gates, sheds and garages.

SMARTWATER -SmartWater is a colourless liquid solution that is simply dabbed onto the uneven surfaces of your valuables.

It can be used to code all sorts of items such as jewellery, ornaments, electrical items and even your motor vehicle. Each bottle contains a unique chemical ‘code’ which is registered to you – conclusively proving ownership.  It cannot be easily seen by the naked eye and is almost impossible to remove.  The liquid glows under ultraviolet light making it easy for the Police to detect.

The Police use it in undercover operations to catch and convict criminals.  Criminals know about SmartWater and fear its power to forensically link them with the scene of a crime. So, by coding your valuables and displaying the SmartWater deterrent signs, you are sending out a powerful warning to any thieves and burglars operating in your area.   Smartwater is available through neighbourhood watch for £20 per pot. That will mark up to 60 items. Just contact the local SNT for purchases.

RINGMASTER - Ringmaster is a computerised crime messaging system run by Bedfordshire Police which offers local residents, Neighbourhood Watch members, businesses, farms, and Bedfordshire Police’s partners, throughout Bedfordshire, details about crime and events in their local area.

  • The service is free to everyone.
  • You don’t need to be involved in Neighbourhood Watch to join Ringmaster.
  • You can receive information via email direct to your computer, view your messages online, or receive messages via phone at a time to suit you.
  • Receive crime reduction advice and help tackle crime in your local area
Currently we have 8,000 members of the public and other partner agencies registered on the system.

You can join Ringmaster by applying online at www.safer-beds.org or alternatively you can phone 01234 275288.

Please remember be on your look out and ring the police if you see anything suspiciousspace
